It’s fine to be upset that Tom didn’t win the Bafta, but remember that it was based on public vote. As much as it probably bothers some people, Adam Deacon is probably more well known than Tom, and could quite possibly have more British fans than Tom.
Mostly I just want to say this: Suck it up. It doesn’t diminish anything Tom has ever done, and has only given him more recognition than he’s ever had before so we should be happy that he was recognized for the work he’s done for the past couple of years. He deserved the recognition with or without the win. You’re acting like he’s been vilified or insulted since he didn’t win.
I agree with you on the fact we shouldn’t be jerks, but disagree on whether Tom was insulted tonight. Not just because he didn’t win the BAFTA; his competition was shown on camera many times (Eddie Redmayne was on screen every few minutes) whereas Tom was only shown once when someone near him got up to get her award, and once when he lost the award. The category he presented wasn’t even broadcasted, and his name was barely mentioned throughout the ceremony.
True, the nomination has brought attention to his career, but the way he was treated during the ceremony shows that the British Academy doesn’t really consider him much of a rising star, and that’s where the insult lies (at least for me).
